Donate first. Dump last. Usable items go to local charities, free Facebook Marketplace listings or repair shops before anything goes to the dump.

No. Leave it where it sits. We come to the garage, the basement or the back bedroom and carry it out ourselves.

What happens to furniture and appliances that still work?

They don't go straight to the dump. Usable items go to local charities and community spaces, to neighbors through free Facebook Marketplace listings, or to repair shops that fix them up and resell them at a discount.
